Academic and English Support

English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes

Academic English skills are an essential part of success in college, and if y我们的 native language is not English, you will need to demonstrate y我们的 language proficiency.

When you apply to 雪的大学 for direct entry into mainstream college classes, we require one of the following scores from an English language 的地方ment test:

  • 雅思- 6.0
  • TOEFL – 63 (minimum 15 per section)
  • Duolingo – 100 (minimum 85 per section)

If y我们的 academic English skills need improvement, 雪的大学 has an excellent English as a Second Language Program (ESL) 帮助你成功.

Created in 1976, 雪的大学 has one of the best English language programs in the 美国西部. With its small classes (12 st乌兰nts on average), convenient campus, and excellent teachers, 雪的大学 offers some real advantages over larger 学校.

How does the ESL program work?

  • St乌兰nts attend classes 5 days a week for 4-5 h我们的s a day.
  • When you arrive on campus, you will 取一个n English test to help determine y我们的 level.
  • 雪的大学 ESL classes are divided into 4 levels, with each one helping you improve y我们的 skills in grammar, listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
  • Most st乌兰nts take 8 weeks to pass each of the 4 levels, so you could finish all 4 只需两个学期就能达到水平.
  • Classes taken in levels 3 and 4 count as 11.5 credits toward graduation.
  • You will have a seamless transition into mainstream college classes after completing the ESL program with a passing grade of 85%.

有! We also run a regular schedule of Conversation Classes, which help you practice English with native speakers in a more relaxed, natural setting. 没有固定的课程 or homework – just turn up and talk! It’s a great way to meet new people, work on y我们的 speaking skills or accent, and improve y我们的 listening skills.

In-person and online tutoring

For this reason, all international st乌兰nts attending 雪的大学 are required to purchase a health insurance policy through LewerMark, 我们的 current health insurance partner. 如果你是 an exchange st乌兰nt, government-sponsored st乌兰nt, or a US passport holder, we can waive this requirement.

The coverage offered through the 雪的大学 LewerMark policy is better than most U.S. citizens have with their own policies. 例如, the policy offers 500,000 USD coverage per illness or accident. It also has evacuation and repatriation benefits.

雪的大学 will assist st乌兰nts in knowing how to go about purchasing a policy. You will automatically be registered for insurance once you register for classes.

U.S. Healthcare and Emergency Procedures

You may not be familiar with healthcare or emergency procedures 在美国. Below are some essential guidelines that can help you feel more prepared and confident in handling medical emergencies and making the best decisions for y我们的 health.

If you need a prescription, it can be sent to (and collected from) the Ephraim Walmart 药店. 雪的大学 offers a free weekly Walmart Bus to all st乌兰nts.

诊所和医生访问:

It's a good idea to familiarize y我们的self with the nearest hospital or urgent care center in case of non-life-threatening medical issues. Additionally, make sure you have health insurance coverage to help with medical expenses. 

We do not have an on-campus clinic, but we do have options that are close by. 请 tell 我们的 office in advance about clinic/hospital appointments so we can arrange the time to take you to one of the following: Ephraim Clinic (No COPAY), Sanpete Valley Hospital (ER) ($100 COPAY), Manti Family Clinic ($ 20元钱), and Mount Pleasant clinic ($ 20元钱).

In the United States, 911 is the emergency tele电话 number you dial to request assistance from the police, fire department, or ambulance. It's free and accessible from any 电话.

请 call 911 first, and then a member of the CGE, if you or someone around you experiences any of these symptoms or any other serious 健康问题:

  • Severe injuries: This could be from accidents, falls, or any situation where there's significant harm to the body.
  • Heart attack or stroke: These are serious medical conditions that require immediate treatment to prevent further damage.
  • Severe allergic reactions: Some people can have severe allergic reactions to things like food, insect stings, or medications, which can be life-threatening if not treated 很快.
  • Severe breathing difficulties: This could be due to asthma attacks, choking, or other respiratory problems that make it hard to breathe. 

Remember, when you call 911, stay as calm as possible and clearly explain the situation. Give y我们的 location, describe what happened, and follow any instructions the dispatcher 给你. Do not move the affected person unless it's absolutely necessary: Moving someone who is injured or in distress can make their condition worse. 等待紧急情况 medical personnel to arrive and let them handle the situation. 

Ambulance rides (for emergencies only!):

If you don’t have a license in y我们的 country, you will need to 取一个 driving license c我们的se before you can take the written and driving 测试. To help people pass the Utah permit test, you can also 取一个 免费许可证实践测验 designed by the Utah Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

You will need to bring the following information to the DMV when you apply:

Filing Tax Returns in the USA

International st乌兰nts going to school 在美国 should file an IRS form(s) even if you don't have to pay taxes (you still need to file a form). 表格及税务 returns typically must be filed before April 15th each year. 雪的大学 cannot provide you specific tax advice, so you should carefully consider y我们的 own situation and determine what tax form to file. 请 see 我们的 常见问题解答s for more information about filing taxes as an international st乌兰nt or scholar.
